Looking for a rhythm activity that gets your students moving, clapping, and having fun? Rhythm trashketball might be your new favorite rhythm game for music class.
We all know that rhythm practice for elementary students can get a little repetitive. Rhythm is one of the most important skills we teach, but it doesn’t always spark excitement in students. That’s where rhythm trashketball comes in. It adds a little competition, a lot of energy, and gets students practicing rhythms without even realizing it.
Whether you’re reviewing a specific rhythm or just want a fun rhythm practice activity for those students who need to move, this game works for any grade.

What Is Rhythm Trashketball?
So, what exactly is rhythm trashketball?
Trashketball is pretty popular, so you likely already know the general concept. It’s simple but super engaging. Students are divided into teams, and each player gets a turn to clap a rhythm. If they get it right, their team earns a point, and they get a chance to shoot a basket using a small ball or crumpled paper into a trash can or recycling bin.
This fun music class game combines rhythm practice, teamwork, and a little friendly competition to get even your most resistant students engaged. It’s a favorite rhythm review activity because students get multiple chances to clap rhythms with a strong incentive to do their very best and learn from any mistakes, so their next turn goes better.

How to Play Rhythm Trashketball in Music Class
- Divide the class into 2 (or more) teams.
- Teams take turns, one player at a time, ensuring everyone gets a turn.
- On each turn, a player claps the rhythm shown on the slide/card.
- If correct → their team earns 1 point. AND the player also gets a chance to shoot a basket.
- Use a small ball or crumpled paper and a trash can/recycling bin.
- Throw from a designated spot (tape line or object on the floor).
- If the basket goes in → earn 1 extra point for their team.
- Keep alternating between teams until all rhythms are done and every student has had a turn.
- The team with the most points at the end wins!
